The Workshop presents our half day, in-person training, to equip you with evidence based tactics to deal with false information and difficult conversations.

The Workshop’s false information training is a practical course designed specifically to help people deal strategically and tactically with incorrect facts about your issue.

This training is for any organisation or person who is finding it difficult to communicate your issues, or have conversations online and in person, due to the use of and belief in incorrect facts. It is best for those who have a sound knowledge of the accurate facts and evidence — or access to people who do.

For people that are dealing primarily with unhelpful and misleading ideas, frames or stories, that don't include very clear factual inaccuracies, then our introductory training in framing and narratives is the recommended first step. You can also sign up for both as a bundle.

DURATION
2 days, 2 x 2hr sessions

COURSE TIMES AND DATES
Thursday 20 March, 10 - 12pm
Friday 21 March, 10 - 12pm

FORMAT
• Pre-reading (1 hour)
• Training workshops (2 x 120 minute Zoom sessions)

Before the course you will receive the training handbook which supports the training and includes pre-reading. The pre-reading, which covers why information is so sticky and why arguing the facts doesn’t work, is a prerequisite for attending the course and we ask that participants please prepare by completing this reading before the day of the training.

During the course participants will learn about:

  • The science of decision making and framing (brains and frames)
  • The role of repetition in both embedding false facts and accurate ones
  • A strategy and technique to inoculate people against false information before they are exposed to it
  • A way to structure potentially difficult in person conversations to create a space for accurate information to be heard
  • A framing technique to present accurate facts in broad communications while avoiding reinforcing false information.
  • This training balances theory, research and applied learning in the form of three practical exercises.

People completing the training will leave:

  • Knowing the importance of values in framing good information
  • Understanding why mythbusting is best avoided as a false information tactic
  • Practice in three evidence based tactics that address false information:
    • one preventative tactic
    • one for difficult in person conversations
    • one for when false information is already widely spread
  • A decision chart to guide you through what strategy or tactic to use when.

Who is this training designed for?

  • People responsible for public consultation
  • People planning for difficult conversations
  • Communications and social media teams
  • People on the front line dealing face to face with the public
